The Perfect Adventure Books for Kids Who Love Mystery and Friendship
I went on a hunt to find children’s books that capture the same sense of adventure as classic chapter books, and I totally hit the jackpot with the Hector Fox and Friends series by Astrid Sheckels. Not only are the illustrations beautiful, but the stories and characters are so much fun. They’re simple enough for 3-year-olds yet captivating for older kids who love to follow the action, imagine themselves in the adventure, and eagerly find out what happens next.

Hector Fox and the Giant Quest

This book kicks off a charming series about Hector and his lovable group of friends—Mo Marten, Charlie Chipmunk, Jeremiah Rabbit, and Lucy Skunk. Together, they set off on adventures, search for giants, solve mysteries, and strengthen their friendships along the way.
Hector Fox and the Raven’s Revenge

This one was a favorite in our house! On a rainy night, Hector and his friends set out through the Green Wood, hoping to reach the Stone Tower in time to protect their friends from an ancient curse that may finally be coming true. My kids still pause when they hear a bird overhead, giggling as we all whisper excitedly, “Raven’s Revenge!”
Hector Fox and the Daring Flight

After a day of flying a kite, the friends decide they want to fly too! Together, they design and build a flying machine, leading to all sorts of adventures—and some serious trouble as well. Such a fun read!
Hector Fox and the Map of Mystery

This was actually the first book in the series that we read, and it instantly captured our attention. My kids were hooked! While fishing on Stony Brook, Hector Fox and his friends find an old map hidden inside a floating bottle. Hoping to uncover a secret treasure, they set off into the woods on their latest adventure. But when a gang of coyotes captures them, steals the map, and locks them in a tunnel, it will take brains, bravery, and teamwork to escape—and discover the true meaning of treasure.
The sweetest adventure series.
We absolutely love this series. It gives me all the nostalgic feels of a classic adventure story while teaching sweet lessons and sparking my kids’ imaginations. Let me know if you read these with your family—I’d love to hear your thoughts on the series! xo -emma
