Travel First Aid Kit for Families: Everything You Need in One Box

A couple months ago, we found ourselves completely unprepared when one of our kids got sick during an overnight trip. The very next day, I decided it was time to put together a travel first aid kit, something I could grab anytime we hit the road or head out for a quick overnighter. Today, I’m sharing exactly what I packed in our kit. We’ve already used it on a trip, and it came in handy more than once! It’s mostly stocked for minor illnesses and basic first aid needs, but I’m hoping to eventually upgrade it to include more serious first aid essentials too.

Storage

  1. Here are the mesh pouches we used for each different category: MESH POUCHES
  2. We used this clear bin from Target: CLEAR BIN
  3. We used these labels on each of the pouches: LABELS

What’s inside our Travel First Aid Kit:

Pain Management

  1. Kids Tylenol
  2. Kids Ibuprofen
  3. Adult Tylenol + Ibuprofen
  4. Lidocaine Cream (prescribed for Eli as needed for port accessing)

Cold and Allergy

  1. Kids Zyrtec
  2. Saline Mist: we have Little Remedies currently but have also used the Boogie Baby brand before.
  3. Nose suction: Nose Frida is our go to for this. We have used the manual one and the electric one.
  4. Small pack of tissues and boogie wipes.

Cough

  1. Kids cough medicine. I know, I know-cough medicine for kids is total hit or miss. So add it if you want. We’ve had luck with this one: Kids cough medicine
  2. Vicks Rub (we’ve had good experience with this rub on stick or the Frida Baby Brand)
  3. Cough Drops

Nausea

  1. Dramamine
  2. Zofran (prescribed for Eli during treatment)
  3. Barf bags (we keeps these in our car, this kit, and 1 or 2 in each bedroom for emergencies. They are awesome)

Bandages

  1. Band-Aids (variety of sizes): We really like the Target Brand or here is one on Amazon
  2. Alcohol Prep Wipes
  3. Bacitracin Cream: Target Brand or on Amazon
  4. Tweezers

Medical Tools

  1. Thermometer (our nurses suggested an underarm for Eli and we feel like it’s been pretty acurate)
  2. Oxygen Pulse Oximeter
  3. Syringes/Medicine Cups

General

  1. Melatonin Gummies: Our kids have a really hard time sleeping the first night we’re somewhere new. I love that these are only .5mg and my kids don’t mind the taste. Talk to your pediatrician if you have any questions about melatonin.
  2. Miralax
  3. Contact Supplies
  4. Medication specific to our family’s needs, i.e. Eli’s daily chemo

Ready for the Road (and Whatever Comes With It)

Putting together this travel first aid kit has already saved us a few stressful moments on the road, and honestly, it just feels good to be a little more prepared. I know every family’s needs are different, but I hope sharing what’s in our kit gives you a helpful place to start. Whether it’s a sniffly nose, a scraped knee, or just peace of mind, you’ll be glad you packed it. Here’s to smoother travels and fewer surprises!

I’m alway looking for things to add to our kit and would love to hear any suggestions. Let me know below. What would you add to yours?
