DIY Flower Crown: An Easy Spring Craft for Kids (with Real Flowers)
There’s something so sweet about handing the kids a basket and sending them out to pick flowers and even sweeter when those little handfuls of dandelions and wildflowers turn into something they can actually wear. This DIY flower crown is one of our favorite simple spring crafts, and the best part? You probably already have most of what you need at home. It’s low-mess, easy to size for any head (toddler to grown-up), and the flowers do all the decorating for you.

An Easy DIY Flower Crown Anyone Can Make
If you’re looking for a spring or summer craft that’s equal parts nature walk and cozy afternoon activity, this is it. We used real flowers we picked right in the yard, dandelions and a few wild sprigs of greenery, but you can absolutely use faux flowers if you’d like a crown that lasts. Here’s everything you need and exactly how we made ours.
What You’ll Need

- Kraft cardstock or thin poster board (we used two brown strips)
- A single hole punch
- Yarn or ribbon (any color—we used a soft blue)
- Clear Tape
- Scissors
- Fresh picked flowers (free!) dandelions, clover, daisies, or any sturdy little blooms. Prefer something longer-lasting? Use a bundle of fake flowers.
How to Make a DIY Flower Crown
- Go on a flower walk. Send the kids out to gather a handful of flowers and a few sprigs of greenery. Look for sturdy stems, dandelions are perfect.
- Make the band. Cut two strips of kraft cardstock about 1 to 1½ inches wide. It will become almost like a headband on your child’s head so measure accordingly.
- Punch two rows of holes. Using the hole punch, punch a row of holes along the top and another along the bottom of the band. These little holes are what hold your flowers in place.
- Weave in the flowers. Trim the stems short, then thread them through so each bloom sits snug against the front. Tuck greenery in between to fill any gaps, and use a piece of tape on the back to secure any loose stems.
- Add the ties. Punch one hole at each end of the band and thread a piece of yarn through each side. This lets you tie the crown closed and adjust it to fit any head.
- Crown your little one! Tie it on, adjust, and admire your masterpiece.
Why We Love This Craft
It turns an ordinary walk outside into a whole afternoon of fun, and there’s something magical about watching a pile of picked dandelions become a crown your kid is so proud to wear. It’s forgiving, too—there’s truly no wrong way to do it, which makes it perfect for little hands.
Tips for the Prettiest Flower Crown
- Pick flowers with thicker, sturdier stems so they hold up when you thread them through.
- Real flowers will wilt within a day or two, so make these the same day you plan to wear them. Want one that lasts? Swap in faux flowers.
- For toddlers, you handle the hole punching and let them choose and “plant” each flower.
- No yarn on hand? Ribbon or even twine works just as well.
A Simple Spring Memory in the Making
