Homemade Snow: An Easy 2-Ingredient Sensory Activity for Toddlers

When you live somewhere that refuses to snow—hi, Utah—sometimes you just have to make your own! This homemade snow is one of our favorite toddler activities for a cozy day indoors, and it comes together with just two ingredients you probably already have at home. It’s cool to the touch, soft and fluffy, completely moldable, and best of all, toddler-approved. Scoop it, pack it, build a tiny snowy village, and then do it all over again.
An Easy 2-Ingredient Homemade Snow Recipe
Here’s the magic: baking soda and white conditioner. That’s it! When you mix the two together, the powder transforms into a soft, packable “snow” that feels surprisingly cold and holds its shape just like the real thing. We set ours up in a shallow bin with a few little trees for a mini winter wonderland, but honestly, the mixing is half the fun. Here’s everything you’ll need and exactly how we made ours.
What You’ll Need

- 3 cups baking soda
- 3/4 cup white conditioner (any inexpensive white conditioner works)
- A shallow bin or tray to play in
- Mini trees, small toys, or containers for decorating and play
- Scoops, cups, or spoons (optional, but great for little hands)
How to Make Homemade Snow
- Measure your baking soda. Pour 3 cups of baking soda into your bin.
- Add the conditioner. Add about 3/4 cup of white conditioner, a little at a time.
- Mix it together. Use your hands (or let the kids dig in!) to mix until it looks crumbly and clumps together when you squeeze it. Add a little more conditioner for packable snow, or a little more baking soda if it feels too wet.
- Set the scene. Smooth it out and add a few mini trees, small toys, or cups to create a little snowy world.
- Let them play! Scoop, pack, build, and knock it all down—then build it again.

Why We Love This Activity
It’s the kind of activity that buys you a peaceful twenty minutes (or more!) while little hands stay happily busy. The snow is soft, cold, and endlessly moldable, and there’s truly no wrong way to play with it. It’s a wonderful sensory experience, it stores well for next time, and it brings a little winter magic indoors—no coats, boots, or actual cold required.
Tips for the Best Homemade Snow
- Adjust as you go. Add conditioner a little at a time—more conditioner makes it moldable, more baking soda keeps it fluffy.
- Plan for a little mess. Lay down a towel or set up on an easy-to-sweep floor. Cleanup is simple with a quick vacuum or wipe.
- Mind the scent. Use an unscented or lightly scented conditioner if your little one is sensitive to smells.
- Keep it supervised. This one’s for playing, not tasting, so stay close with younger toddlers.
- Save it for later. Store it in an airtight container or a bin with a lid, and it’ll keep for a few weeks—just give it a quick fluff before the next play session.
A Little Winter Magic, Anytime
Whether there’s snow on the ground or not, this simple homemade snow is an easy way to bring the season inside. It’s become one of our go-to no-snow-day activities, and we hope it brings your little ones as much joy as it brings ours.
