Cook Time 5 minutes

Total Time 25 minutes
Servings: 6 servings (about 4 cups)
Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 6–8 medium apples ideally 2 sweet apples for every 1 tart apple
  • ½ cup water
  • 1–2 tablespoons lemon juice optional
  • ½–1 teaspoon cinnamon optional
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Brown sugar, granulated sugar, or maple syrup only if needed after cooking

Method

  1. Peel the apples for a smooth, classic applesauce, or leave the skins on for a more rustic texture. Core and cut into chunks.
  2. Place the apple chunks in the Instant Pot with the water. Add the lemon juice, cinnamon, and a tiny pinch of salt.
  3. Secure the lid and cook on High Pressure for 5 minutes.
  4. Let the pressure release naturally for about 10 minutes, then carefully release any remaining pressure.
  5. Open the lid and stir; the apples should practically fall apart. For chunky applesauce use a potato masher; for smooth, use an immersion blender right in the pot.
  6. Taste BEFORE adding sugar. With the 2:1 sweet-to-tart ratio it may already be plenty sweet. If you want it sweeter, stir in a little brown sugar, granulated sugar, or maple syrup.

Notes

Sweet apples: Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady. Tart apples: Granny Smith, Braeburn, McIntosh. Store cooled applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
