Handprint American Flag T-Shirts: An Easy 4th of July Craft for Kids
There is something about a tiny handprint that gets us every single time. Those little fingers do not stay little for long, and this craft turns them into a keepsake you can actually wear. These handprint American flag t-shirts came together so quickly and made for an exciting morning at our house.
If you are hunting for an easy 4th of July craft for kids, this is the one. It is simple enough for the littlest hands, the supplies cost just a few dollars, and you end up with a matching set of patriotic tees that are perfect for the parade, the backyard barbecue, or a sweet photo on the porch. Let’s be real, the messy blue palm is half the fun.

What You’ll Need
Here is everything we used. We grabbed our supplies at Target, and we have linked Amazon options too in case you would rather have them show up at your door.
- White cotton t-shirts. We used a 5-pack of toddler tees so the whole crew could match. (Target | Amazon)
- Blue acrylic craft paint. Ours was Mondo Llama in “Deep Sea.” (Target | Amazon)
- Red acrylic craft paint. Ours was Mondo Llama in “Cherry Jam.” (Target | Amazon)
- A paintbrush. A flat brush works best for the stripes. (Target | Amazon)
- Gold foil star stickers. These are the little secret behind the white stars. (Amazon)
- A piece of cardboard, a paper plate or palette, and paper towels or baby wipes for quick cleanup.
Quick note: we already had the gold star stickers in our craft bin, so they were not part of our Target run. Any small foil star stickers will work.

How to Make Handprint American Flag T-Shirts
- Prep your shirt. Lay the t-shirt flat and smooth out the wrinkles. Slide a piece of cardboard inside so the paint cannot bleed through to the back.
- Place your stars. Stick the gold foil stars onto the upper left section of the shirt, right where the blue part of the flag will go. Press the edges down firmly so paint cannot sneak underneath.
- Paint the hand. Brush a nice even coat of blue paint over your child’s palm and fingers. A thicker coat gives you a crisper print.
- Press the handprint. Press their painted hand down right over the stars, hold each finger for a second or two, then lift straight up. This blue handprint becomes the star part of your flag.
- Add the stripes. Using your brush, paint red stripes to the right of the handprint. We did four short stripes to finish off the flag.
- Peel and reveal. Once the paint is dry to the touch, gently peel away the star stickers.
- Let it dry. Let the shirt dry completely before wearing or washing. See our tips below for making it last.

Why We Love This Craft
This one checks all of our boxes. It is genuinely toddler-friendly, it uses supplies we already had or could grab for a few dollars, and it ends with a keepsake instead of one more thing to toss in the recycling bin. We love that each shirt is a little time capsule of how big, or how small, their hands are this summer. And honestly, nothing beats watching siblings line up in their matching flag tees on the 4th of July.
Tips for the Best Handprint Shirts
- Slide cardboard inside the shirt every time. It keeps the paint from soaking through to the back.
- Press the star stickers down well. Firm edges mean clean, crisp white stars.
- Be generous with the paint on the hand. A thin coat gives you a patchy print.
- Heat-set it so it lasts. Once the shirt is fully dry (we like to wait a full day), lay a thin towel or cloth over the design and press with a warm iron, or run it through the dryer. This helps the paint hold up in the wash.
- Wash it inside out on cold, and skip the bleach.
- Work one shirt and one kiddo at a time, and keep baby wipes within arm’s reach for the inevitable blue handprint on everything else.

That is it! A simple, budget-friendly 4th of July craft that turns into a keepsake your kids will actually want to wear. If you make these, we would love to hear how they turned out!
