Maternity Clothes Worth Buying: Our Favorite Pregnancy Finds

Pregnancy is such a weird time to shop for clothes. Your body is changing constantly, you want to feel comfortable and you still want to feel like yourself. You might also be in the same boat as us where we really didn’t want to buy an entirely new wardrobe that we would only wear for a few months.

We’ve found that the sweet spot is having a handful of maternity pieces you genuinely love mixed in with clothes you already own.

These are some of the maternity clothes worth buying that have made getting dressed during pregnancy a whole lot easier. From jeans that accommodate a growing belly to dresses, matching sets, and plenty of comfy athleisure, these are the pieces we’ve been reaching for most.

Maternity Jeans + Pants

A good pair of maternity pants is one area where we think it’s worth buying something specifically designed for pregnancy. You can make a lot of regular clothes work with a growing belly, but eventually your favorite jeans just aren’t going to cooperate.

Old Navy Maternity Pants

We’ve had great luck finding affordable maternity basics at Old Navy. They tend to have lots of simple styles that are easy to mix with sweaters, tees, button-downs, and other pieces already in your closet.

Our biggest maternity-jean tip is to find one or two pairs you really like rather than trying to recreate your entire pre-pregnancy denim collection. You really don’t need seven pairs of maternity jeans.

Maternity Athleisure

If there is one category that earns its keep during pregnancy, it’s this one.

Leggings, stretchy pants, comfy tops, and easy layers work for everything from school drop-off and errands to walks and lounging around the house. We especially love finding pieces that don’t scream “maternity” and might still work postpartum.

Amazon Maternity Athleisure Finds

We’ve found several great affordable options on Amazon that are easy to mix and match throughout the week.

Ribbed Maternity Shorts

Love the fabric on these ribbed maternity shorts. They also come in a few different colors.

Maternity Leggings

CRZYoga Leggings

Always love the CRZYoga Brand Leggings. The fabric is so soft!

Wide-Leg Maternity Pants

We also love having a wide-leg option when you want the comfort of leggings but want to feel a little more put together. Pair them with a fitted tee, tank, sweatshirt, or cardigan and you have one of the easiest pregnancy outfits.

Wide Leg Leggings

Always love a good wide leg legging.

Maternity Dresses

Dresses might be the easiest maternity clothing category of all. They’re comfortable, there’s nothing digging into your waist, and one piece gives you an entire outfit.

We like having an inexpensive everyday option for church, showers, dinners, or regular days when you want to feel a little more dressed up.

Find One Dress to Splurge On.

Most maternity clothes don’t need to be investment pieces, but we do think there’s room for one dress you absolutely love.

Maybe it’s for maternity photos, a baby shower, family pictures, a wedding, or just because pregnancy is a season of life worth documenting.

PinkBlush Maternity has some really beautiful options that feel more special than your everyday maternity dress.

Sweater Dress

We’re loving this perfect sweater dress for fall and winter.

Our philosophy here: buy one dress you feel really beautiful in rather than five dresses you only sort of like.

Matching Sets

Matching sets are one of our favorite cheats for looking put together while basically wearing pajamas.

They’re easy, comfortable, and require zero thought when you’re standing in front of your closet trying to figure out what fits that particular week.

Bonus points if you can wear the pieces separately with other things in your closet.

Bras + Basics

This is another category where comfort wins.

As your body changes, the bras you already own can quickly become uncomfortable. Rather than buying a ton at once, we’d start with one or two soft, stretchy bras and see what works for you.

If you’re planning to nurse, it can also be worth choosing bras that transition into postpartum and nursing so you’re not buying another entirely new set a few months later.

We’d take the same approach with tanks and basic tees: buy a few maternity versions if you need the extra length and stretch, but don’t feel like every basic in your closet needs to be replaced.

Soft nursing bras

We LOVE these nursing bras. They can be worn during pregnancy as well and are so soft and comfortable. I sleep in them every night while nursing.

Underwire Nursing Bra

We also love this underwire bra. It’s a great option for when you want to feel a little more put together.

Shop Your Own Closet First

Before buying anything, go through what you already have.

Oversized button-downs
Cardigans
Sweaters
Loose dresses
Stretchy skirts
Oversized tees
Jackets
Open-front layers
Elastic-waist pants
Longer tanks and tees

One of our favorite ways to build a maternity wardrobe is to start with your regular closet and then fill the holes with maternity pieces rather than starting from scratch.

Don’t Forget to Thrift

Maternity clothes are PERFECT for thrifting.

Most maternity pieces have only been worn for a few months, which means you can find some barely-used gems secondhand. Check thrift stores, online thrift websites like Poshmark, Facebook Marketplace, local mom groups, or ask sisters and friends if they have maternity clothes sitting in a bin somewhere.

It’s especially worth looking secondhand for things like: maternity jeans, special-occasion dresses, sweaters, coats, and maternity-specific tops.

You can save your money for the pieces you really care about and thrift some of the basics you’ll only need temporarily.

Two of us thrifted this Bohme dress from two different sellers on Poshmark and it became an absolute staple during pregnancy and postpartum.

Build a Small Maternity Wardrobe You Love

You don’t need an entirely new closet to get dressed during pregnancy.

Start with what you own. Borrow and thrift where you can. Add a couple pairs of pants that fit comfortably, plenty of athleisure, a few easy dresses, and maybe one special piece that makes you feel really good.

Pregnancy is temporary, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend nine months wearing clothes you don’t like.

These are the maternity clothes worth buying for us. The pieces that make getting dressed easier, keep us comfortable, and still help us feel a little bit like ourselves.

And if you’ve found a maternity piece you couldn’t have survived pregnancy without, send it our way. We’re always swapping recommendations around here.
