We absolutely love children’s books in our household! But, I’ll be the first to say that not all children’s books are created equal. I spend a lot of time checking out a huge stack of books from the library and only really loving a few. This is exactly what I did when looking for some snow-themed children’s books that celebrate winter fun. My two kiddos and I read each of these books, and we all agreed—these six are definitely at the top of our list! We hope you and your little ones enjoy them just as much!
The Best Snow-Themed Children’s Books for Cozy Winter Reading
MICE SKATING by Annie Silvestro, illustrated by Teagan White

Most of the field mice like to stay burrowed inside during the winter, but not Lucy! She loves getting outside and enjoying winter. Her favorite winter activity is ice skating and she spends this book trying to help her friends see how much fun they can actually have outside during winter.
Just SNOW Already! by Howard McWilliam

This book is an absolute blast to read. When one little boy hears that there might be snow in the forecast, he can hardly wait. He keeps checking outside to see if there is any snow. While he’s looking up at the sky, there is an absolute circus of events happening below him in the street. We had a blast pouring over each page to see if we could spot the new things happening at every turn.
Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, illustrated by P. J. Lynch

We all know this famous poem – and yet reading it with these stunning illustrations brought the poem to life for me. This was such a peaceful book to read with my kids and I loved the chance to get in some poetry while reading a book to them.
Snow by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Lauren Stringer

This book captured the feeling of snow perfectly for me. In a very poetic feel, Cynthia Rylant describes the different types of snow and what that might mean for a child’s day. The snow that comes quietly at night, the big flakes that fall during a school day sending kids home early, and more. The words and the illustrations are perfectly paired and this was such a magical read for me and my kids.
Whose Tracks in the Snow? By Alexandra Milton

Another book with beautiful illustrations. If you’re looking for a fun, more educational book to read to your kids this might be the one for you. Each page starts with asking the questions about whose tracks are in the snow while describing what they look like. As you turn the page you see the animal who left the tracks. For younger audiences you could just leave it at that, but for older kids the author also gives you a small paragraph that talks about what that specific animal might be found doing in the winter time.
Winter Dance by Marion Dane Bauer, illustrated by Richard Jones

Loved this book! Winter is coming and Fox isn’t quite sure what he’s supposed to be doing. He spends the story talking with other animals to see what they do during winter to decide what is right for him. Stay tuned for a Movement Lesson plan based on this book coming tomorrow from Eliza. It is the perfect book to get your littles off the couch and moving while you connect learning and movement.
