Best Toys for 3–4 Year Olds That We’d Buy Again

Three and four are such fun ages for toys. Little imaginations are taking off, pretend play becomes a big part of everyday life, and kids are starting to create entire worlds of their own.

But after raising little ones of our own, we’ve learned that not every toy is worth the space it takes up.

So the six of us sisters got together, went through the toys in our own homes, and made a list of the ones we’d happily buy all over again.

These aren’t just toys that look cute online. They’re toys our families have personally owned and loved. The ones our kids have played with, returned to, and made countless little memories with.

Whether you’re shopping for a third birthday, fourth birthday, Christmas, or just looking for a gift that will get plenty of use, here are 12 of our favorite toys for 3–4 year olds.

Always check the manufacturer’s age recommendation for the specific product before purchasing.

1. Tiny Land Wooden Train Set

There’s a reason wooden train sets have been a childhood favorite for generations.

Kids can build winding tracks, create little towns, and come up with all sorts of adventures along the way. We love that there’s no single way to play. The tracks can be rearranged again and again, making each play session something new.

One of our favorite things about this Tiny Land set is that it’s compatible with other major wooden train track brands. That means you can expand your collection over time without needing to replace what you already own. We’ve also found a lot of wooden tracks at thrift stores that we add to our collection!

It’s the kind of toy that can grow right along with your kids.

Age recommendation: Ages 3+.

2. Picasso Magnetic Tiles (100-Piece Set)

If we could recommend one category of building toys for almost every playroom, magnetic tiles would be high on the list.

They’re simple enough for preschoolers to start exploring, but offer endless possibilities as kids get older. Towers, houses, castles, garages, and whatever else they can dream up.

We love how magnetic tiles encourage creativity and independent play without needing instructions, batteries, or a screen.

And because kids can build something different every time, they’re a toy that can stay interesting for years.

Age recommendation: Check the specific set’s manufacturer rating. Regularly inspect magnetic tiles for damage and stop using any with cracks or exposed magnets. Also, we know there are a million different brands of these so you can do your own research to see which brand might be best for your family.

We especially love toys that encourage storytelling and imaginative play, and these little animal figures are perfect for that.

4. Wooden Play Kitchens: Two Favorites

A play kitchen is one of those bigger toys that can become a staple in a home for years.

We love toys that encourage kids to imitate the everyday things they see their parents doing. There’s something so sweet about watching little ones make pretend dinner, bake imaginary cookies, or serve up a meal for the whole family.

Two of our favorite wooden play kitchens are the IKEA DUKTIG and the Tiny Land Wooden Play Kitchen. Both encourage hours of imaginative play, but each has something a little different to offer.

Option 1: IKEA DUKTIG Play Kitchen

The IKEA DUKTIG is one of our favorites because of its quality and simple design. It’s sturdy, looks nice in a playroom, and gives kids plenty of room to pretend they’re cooking, baking, and serving up meals.

If you’re looking for a classic wooden play kitchen with a clean, timeless look, this is a great option.

Option 2: Tiny Land Wooden Play Kitchen

If you’re looking for a play kitchen with a few more details and features, the Tiny Land kitchen is another favorite.

It’s full of little touches that make pretend cooking feel extra special. Kids can spend time preparing imaginary meals, organizing their kitchen, and serving up all kinds of creations.

We love that it gives children their own little space to play house and use their imaginations.

5. Wooden Makeup Set

This is such a fun gift for little ones who love to imitate the grown-ups in their lives.

This wooden set includes pretend beauty accessories, so kids can play dress-up without using real makeup.

That’s one of our favorite things about it. Kids get all the fun of pretending to get ready, but everything is made for imaginative play.

It’s a sweet little gift for kids who love dress-up, playing salon, or getting ready alongside Mom.

Age recommendation: Check the manufacturer’s recommended age for the specific set, particularly because it includes several small accessories.

Magnetic dress-up dolls are such a fun way to encourage creativity and storytelling.

Kids can mix and match outfits, change accessories, and create their own little adventures with their favorite princesses.

We love that these sets are simple, hands-on, and easy to pull out for a little quiet play. They’re also a great gift for kids who love Disney Princesses but already have plenty of traditional dolls.

There are several princess options to choose from, so you can pick a favorite or build a little collection.

Age recommendation: Ages 3+. Keep all magnetic pieces intact and discontinue use if any magnets become exposed.

7. KidKraft Adventure Bound Pirate Ship

We love toys that give kids a whole world to imagine, and this wooden pirate ship does exactly that.

One day it’s sailing across the ocean in search of treasure. The next day it’s rescuing someone from a deserted island. There’s no shortage of stories kids can come up with.

It’s a great toy for kids who love pretend play, little figures, and making up their own adventures.

And because it’s not tied to one specific story or character, there’s plenty of room for creativity.

Age recommendation: Ages 3+. Some accessories may contain small parts.

Sometimes you just need an activity that will keep little hands busy, and Kinetic Sand is one of our favorites for exactly that.

Kids can scoop, squish, mold, and build with it in all sorts of ways. We love that it’s a simple sensory activity that encourages creativity without needing a lot of instructions.

It’s especially nice for quiet afternoons, rainy days, or those moments when everyone needs something a little different to do.

Add a few cups, scoops, or molds, and you’ve got an activity that can be enjoyed over and over.

Age recommendation: Ages 3+. Supervise play and remind children that the sand is not for eating.

This is one of those toys that’s both simple and full of possibilities.

Kids can mix and match colorful stems, petals, and flower pieces to create their own little gardens and bouquets.

We love that there’s no right or wrong way to build. Kids can experiment with different colors and arrangements, take everything apart, and start again.

It’s a fun gift for little ones who love creating things with their hands. Also, we know there are a million different brands of these so you can do your own research to see which brand might be best for your family.

Age recommendation: Check the manufacturer’s recommended age for this set. Keep small pieces away from younger siblings.

10. Dinosaur Building Set

For little dinosaur lovers, a building set is such a fun way to combine two favorite things.

We love toys that encourage kids to slow down, follow a few steps, and enjoy the satisfaction of making something themselves.

A dinosaur building set can be a fun project to work on together, especially for younger kids who may need a little help.

And once it’s built, the dinosaur can become part of all sorts of imaginative adventures.

11. Wooden Dollhouse

A dollhouse is one of those classic toys that can inspire years of imaginative play.

Kids can rearrange furniture, create little families, decorate rooms, and invent stories about the people who live inside.

We love that a dollhouse gives kids the freedom to create their own little world, and that it can be enjoyed in so many different ways as they grow.

Eliza and Emma have Magnolia Doll Houses they love but we couldn’t find any for sale! You can always check thrift stores to find one you love.

This ROBUD wooden dollhouse is a sweet option for a bigger birthday or Christmas gift.

Age recommendation: Check the manufacturer’s recommended age and supervise play with smaller furniture and accessories.

The Melissa & Doug Ice Cream Counter lets kids scoop, stack, and serve pretend ice cream cones, complete with all the fun of running their own little shop.

We love how it encourages imaginative play and gives kids an opportunity to practice taking turns, making choices, and playing together.

It’s the kind of toy that can become part of so many different pretend-play adventures.

Why These Toys Made Our List

When we started putting together our gift guides, we didn’t want to create another long list of toys we’d never tried.

Instead, we went through our own homes and asked ourselves one simple question:

Would we buy this again?

Between six sisters and all our kids, we’ve had plenty of opportunities to see which toys get played with, which ones last, and which ones end up being worth the money.

These are the toys that made the cut.

Some are bigger investments, while others are small, affordable gifts. But all of them are toys we’ve personally loved and feel good about recommending.

We hope this list helps you find something that will bring a little more creativity, imagination, and fun into the everyday moments of childhood.
