Surviving Sick Season with Toddlers

If you’re parenting a toddler, you already know: toddler sick season can feel endless. One runny nose turns into a cough, which turns into disrupted sleep, extra snuggles, and a house that smells faintly of eucalyptus and saline. While we can’t prevent every cold, having a few reliable tools on hand can make those long nights feel a little more manageable.

Below are a few staples that have truly helped us get through sick season with toddlers, not as medical advice, but as supportive tools that bring comfort, peace of mind, and sometimes a bit more sleep.

Frida Baby Electronic Nasal Aspirator

My favorite toddler product for sure! You can buy it here!

When toddlers are congested, everything feels harder, for them and for us. The Frida Baby electronic nasal aspirator has been a game changer during colds. Unlike traditional bulb syringes, it offers consistent suction with much less effort (and resistance) from little ones.

Clearing nasal passages before naps and bedtime can make breathing easier and help toddlers rest more comfortably. I especially appreciate that it feels quick and efficient, which matters when you’re caring for a sick child who just wants to be held.

Tip: Using the aspirator after a warm bath or paired with saline can help loosen mucus even more.

Saline Nose Mist

A simple saline nose mist is one of those quiet heroes of sick season. This is the brand I love! It’s gentle, non-medicated, and safe to use regularly to help moisturize nasal passages and loosen congestion.

Saline can be especially helpful in dry winter months or before using a nasal aspirator. While some toddlers protest at first, many grow used to it quickly, especially when it becomes part of a predictable routine.

Tip: Spraying saline while your toddler is slightly reclined (or distracted with a book or song) can make the process smoother.

Finger Oxygen Monitor (Pulse Oximeter)

Having a finger oxygen monitor at home has given me peace of mind during respiratory illnesses, especially when coughs linger or breathing sounds off. For us, it’s been a reassurance tool, not a diagnostic one. We use this one.

Important note: This is not medical advice or a substitute for professional care. If your child is struggling to breathe, breathing rapidly, has retractions, blue lips, or if your gut tells you something isn’t right, always contact your pediatrician or seek medical care immediately.

That said, for older toddlers who tolerate it, an oxygen monitor can sometimes help ease worries during the night when you’re deciding whether to call the doctor or continue monitoring.

Humidifier

We have three of these in our house now, haha. A humidifier is a must-have during sick season. Adding moisture to the air can help ease congestion, soothe dry coughs, and keep nasal passages from becoming overly irritated, especially in winter when indoor air is dry.

We like to run a cool-mist humidifier during naps and overnight, cleaning it regularly to prevent mold or buildup. Even when everyone is healthy, it often stays in rotation during colder months.

Tip: Place the humidifier a safe distance from your child’s bed and use distilled water if recommended by the manufacturer.

A Gentle Reminder

Sick season is exhausting, and caring for toddlers through illness can feel heavy, physically and emotionally. These tools won’t make sickness disappear, but they can make the days and nights feel a little more supported.

Trust your instincts, lean on your pediatrician when needed, and give yourself grace. Sometimes the best medicine really is rest, comfort, and being close.

Here’s to getting through sick season, one saline spray, humidifier refill, and extra cuddle at a time.
